Dental bridges are appliances used to replace between one and three consecutive missing teeth. Comprising one to three replacement teeth called pontics, traditional fixed dental bridges are held in place by dental crowns affixed to the natural teeth adjacent to the gap once occupied by the missing teeth. Once a bridge is bonded into place, the replacement teeth prevent the surrounding natural teeth from shifting toward the gap, one of the consequences of losing teeth. The bridge also makes it easier to bite, chew, and speak.
Although fixed dental bridges remain an excellent way to replace missing teeth, the current standard for replacing multiple missing teeth on a single arch is the implant-supported bridge. Unlike traditional fixed metal bridges, implant-supported bridges do not rely on natural teeth for support. Rather, they are attached to dental implants that are surgically embedded into the jaw. Implant-supported bridges offer all of the advantages of their traditional fixed counterparts; however, they also halt the recession of the jaw and gum tissues that begins to occur when teeth are lost. This is because the human body cannot distinguish between a natural tooth root and a titanium one, so it resumes its supply of blood and nutrients to those tissues once again after the titanium dental implant has fused with the jaw bone.
Dental crowns are restorations that are customized to replicate the entire visible surface area of a tooth. When bonded on top of a natural tooth, a dental crown can be used to:
Dr. Carpenter and Dr. Kim craft dental crowns to exacting specifications to ensure the most natural-looking results possible. Our in-office CEREC® grinding and milling machine allows your dental crown to be designed, manufactured, and placed on your tooth in a single visit. Rather than having to wait one to two weeks for your crown to return from a dental laboratory, you will leave our office with your oral health restored and your smile complete.
Unlike the dentures of the past, the custom dentures available at Poway Center for Advanced Dentistry are created to fit comfortably yet snugly in the mouth and provide a cosmetically appealing solution to missing teeth. Because Dr. Carpenter and Dr. Kim take exceptional care to provide patients with dentures that complement the unique anatomy of their jaws, our dentures are far less likely to slip or shift out of place at inopportune times. Patients who currently struggle with ill-fitting dentures or who have been told by other dentists that they are “difficult” to fit for dentures are welcomed by our experienced dentists.
While our traditional removable dentures represent a significant improvement over their counterparts from the past, patients who are looking for the premier solution to missing teeth will want to consider attaching their dentures to dental implants. Implant-supported dentures are attached to titanium posts that are fused together with the patient’s jaw; they are every bit as stable and secure as a full set of healthy, natural teeth. If you currently wear dentures that do not fit or function properly, or if you are experiencing problems with chewing and speaking because you are missing most or all of your natural teeth, then implant-supported dentures could profoundly improve your quality of life.
If you are missing one or more of your natural teeth, then you owe it to yourself to at least consider dental implants. Dental implants are tiny titanium posts, similar to screws, which are surgically placed in the jaw bone, where they function as artificial tooth roots. Through a process called osseointegration, dental implants fuse together with the jaw bone, essentially becoming a natural part of the patient’s anatomy. This allows dental implants to support dental crowns, dental bridges, and even full sets of dentures with nearly as much strength and stability as actual tooth roots provide to natural teeth.
Crucial to the success of any dental implant procedure is the all-important planning stage. At Poway Center for Advanced Dentistry, we use state-of-the-art digital imaging systems to determine the optimal position and angle to place each implant. This is highly important as achieving the highest possible bone-to-implant ratio is the best way to ensure the long-term success of dental implants. When properly placed and maintained, dental implants can last for decades, and possibly even a lifetime.
Suitable candidates for dental implants will have jaw bones that are sufficiently dense to support the implant posts. For patients whose jaw bones have degraded to extensively to have implants placed right away, it may be necessary to first perform a bone grafting procedure. Once the reconstructed bone tissue has healed, most patients are then able to undergo dental implant surgery successfully.
One of the goals of the dental team at Poway Center for Advanced Dentistry is to create an environment where patients feel comfortable, safe, and completely unjudged at all times. Many patients are hesitant to visit the dentist despite having multiple oral health problems because they are afraid of being made to feel guilty or as though they are being scolded. As a patient of Dr. Carpenter’s or Dr. Kim’s, you can expect to be treated only with compassion, respect, and courtesy, whatever the state of your teeth and gums. We are not here to comment upon your past dental habits, but rather to chart a course toward a bright future as your partners in good oral health.
The truth is that health, function, and beauty can be restored to virtually any smile. Even if you have multiple complex dental problems, our dentists will find the appropriate solutions to treat them as efficiently and effectively as possible. The purpose of full mouth reconstruction is to identify the precise combination of restorative, general, and cosmetic dentistry treatments that will produce a clean, healthy smile full of radiant teeth once again.
There are no two full mouth reconstruction plans exactly alike. Each treatment plan is customized to meet the unique needs of the individual patient. Commonly combined treatments include:
